I'm currently doing a frame-off resto and this weekend I got my wheels bare to the backing plates. I have my wheel cylinder rebuild kits and my brake spring kits ready to rebuild all of the brakes. After cleaning the backing plate, there appears to be just a little surface rust. I assume that the backing plate was not painted from the factory (someone correct me if I'm wrong) and that's why there is some rust.

I'd like to hear some opinions as to what I should do to the backing plates before rebuilding the brakes:

1) Do nothing, they lasted 50 years just fine.
2) Wire brush any loose rust and leave bare.
3) Wire brush any loose rust and paint with some high temp rattle can paint.
4) Other?

Thanks

Don't know if they were painted from factory or not. (probably not) However I would clean them up real good and paint them. Powder coating would look good on them?!

That is a perfect item for Zero Rust. It looks great and lasts forever. Very chipresistant as well.

I like Rustoleum rusty metal primer. It has a good
thick coating & You can paint thecolor on it as
soon as it flashes over, about 30 minutes & the
whole thing is dry in an hour or 2. smile

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Jeff, I second Tony M's suggestion. I did my 4400 backing plates with zero rust when I cleaned them off three years ago. This weekend when I finally got around to putting the new brake parts back on, they still looked great!

Regards,
John

I think I'd paint them. Not so much a matter of looks as a matter of protection against corrosion.
