I want to put the spare under the bed and have been trying to find an after-market system of cabling the tire up under the bed using a winch like system that I've see in Chyrsler vans etc. I thought I could turn the bolt from the inside floor of the bed to raise and lower it. Know of any solution to this problem?

Get a cable winch spare tire mounting assembly that was used on Nissan pickups for years. It uses the screw jack handle to operate the winch from underneath the bed. You could even fabricate a shaft with u-joints and hide the drive inside a fenderwell, if you didn't want a hole through the splash pan at the rear of the bed. There should be thousands of them in salvage yards.

My 98 S-10 pickup also has a neat, cable winch set up. Though it would also be just the ticket for my flatbed.

David , go to your local Pick-A-Part junkyard and look under the bed of the older Datsun 620 & 720 pickups , they all have a ratcheting winch dead that woks with a chain , rather than some crummy cabvle that's sure to rust & break unless you live in California .

F**d ' Couriers ' used the same getup and it's super simple to adapt to any truck with only four holes drilled . you'll love it , no need to crawl 'round in the muck when you need the spare tire .

You'll need the jack handle or make up a simple one to suit tho' , the Courries one is theft proof as it won't release untill it's depressed in the center .

I hope this helps....
