The standard fuel available here is 91 octane. I'm just wondering if there would be any benefit in advancing the timing a bit from standard.

You could probably run a few degrees advanced with no trouble. Just advance it a bit at a time until it pings on grades on hot days and back it off a little bit. You will probably need to re-adjust the idle mixture and speed on the carburator after adjusting the timing for smooth idle.
