I run across a small problem, and that is with a very nice 235 engine Ive located. First can anyone tell me what all these numbers mean? I 15 8 on top of the starter motor - on the block. Then some more numbers..3764476 Then on the cylinder head it has numbers ..3836841 and right under it GM11 Then Ive got a question about a Muncie SM 420 Transmission.. Both of these have aproximately 6000 miles in total on the rebuilds. I believe the 235 engine mount has the front Engine Mount as does the 216 in the 37 at present. So Ive been told. I can get the driveline with this package. Now in order for it to fit the rearend I may have to have the entire drive shaft cut or shortened. Since Im not an expert at this. After shortening it and its welded how can these be BALANCED so it doesnt "jump rope" out of balance sort of speak.. I do want to keep the old rearend. Install Patricks Ring and Pinion. Patricks opinion was to keep the rearend and stock transmission but install the 235.. The transmission and engine are in VERY nice condition. Just broken in.. Can you experts give me advice on this. Sure would be nice. Thanks and Best Wishes To All from - The Land of The Midnight Sun! Inliners ID The block casting number says its a 235 from 1956 to 1962. The I 15 8 means it was cast on September 15, 1958 when coupled with the block casting number. It sounds like a good find! There are some great Finn regions in the US, mostly in logging and mining country. It takes a hard worker to be a logger or miner. 1948 3/4-Ton 5-Window Flatbed Chevrolet 34 Years. If the 235 is a 55 to 62 you will have to get a shortened water pump and even with it there is no room to run a fan as its still too close to the radiator and the water pump is farther down on the block and you will have to use a electric fan. If I had to do it over again I would use a 54 motor as it uses the same water pump as the 216s,I have a 57 235 in my 37 hooked to the original trans a rearend for now but hope to hook up a S10 5 speed and a S10 4X4 rearend in the future. Should I just use that original transmission and install the nice 235 instead of playing around with the Muncie? I do understand that I need a short water pump and flywheel from the 216.. It sure feels "Great" to see my old friends here. The 4 speed wasn't synchronised until the SM420 came out in 1948.

What is your opinion about this: id just like to keep the original transmission if it will work together with this 235 which I think it will but The Double Clutching learning will be a Fun Experience Especially for the wife.. What do you mean by the term "Crash Box"? PS sometimes I get stuck on these English Terms or Slang!! | | | | | Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2000 Posts: 424 | Hey Heikki- Simplest would be to just use the '59 235 that you have found and stick with the stock transmission and rear-end if they work good for you. You may need a different flywheel to bolt to the 235, depending on which flywheel you have now. I can't remember, does your '37 still have the original '37 216? I think it did. If the '59 engine does not have the (2) studs hanging down on the front mount plate, they can be added or your 216 front plate can be used on the 235. On a '39-'40 truck you can move the radiator to the front side of the mount and use washers or spacers to shim the radiator ahead 1/2-3/4" to get some fan clearance. Maybe you could do something similar on your '37? As Jeff said, it does get very tight between the engine and radiator even with the short pump. An aluminum flex fan can help save space too.
If your wife doesn't like shifting the early 4-speed, you may want to try a '37-'39 pickup 3-speed. They shift easier. Or maybe adapt a '40-'46 3-speed in for the 2nd and 3rd gear synchros. Would take some u-joint and/or driveshaft work to get the later splines to match the '37 torque tube and rear, but I'll bet it could be done. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: Aug 2004 Posts: 1,067 | My 235 is mounted in the front. Is that the two studs you are referring to?

'Crashbox' is slang for a non syncromesh transmission. You already know about 'double clutching', which is the method used to provide smooth shifting of those transmissions. Some folks who were not very adept at that procedure would try to 'force' the gears and consequently created a great 'clashing' and 'grinding' of gears; or, 'crashing'. Hence; 'crashbox'. (lots of people still try to shift that way!!)

This guy is putting a GMC 302 into his '37 truck. There is talk about simply moving the radiator forward. Anyway, this thread may be of help to you. Includes pics.
