I've just cleaned and reinstalled the wiper motor on my '50 3600 Chevy. When I turn the motor on, the wipers make one quick swipe to the far sides of the windshield and stop. They don't come back and they don't swipe back and forth like they should.
Have I missed something??? When I took the motor apart, there was a lot of grease and sticky buildup along the chamber where the paddle sweeps back and forth. I cleaned that and made sure the paddle moved freely.
Above the area where the vacuum hose connects to the motor there is a hole which was allowing air to escape from the motor. I plugged that as I saw no hose or other connector that looked like it belonged in there, but I'm wondering what that outlet is for.
I would appreciate some advice, as the rain and snow season is approaching and I plan on driving my truck daily.
Thanks in advance.

John - be a good idea if you greased that paddle back up [use vaseline] - meant to be that way to seal the chamber - the outlet you plugged is prolly there for a good reason, like to allow the vacuum to release when it gets to the end of the stroke
see the wiperman!!

good luck w/ it and the truck, and welcome to the garage - don't hesitate to ask about anything here, be someone along who knows more about it than I grin

I saw one installation where the vaccuum hose from the manifold had a thin wall like aquarium tubing. With vaccuum it collapsed stopping the wipers. Ended up with a thicker wall tubing.

John - Welcome to the bolt. If you unplug the vent hole, your wipers should work as advertised.

Vacuum is sucking air. The hole lets in air to be sucked.

As always a search can lead to a thread that answers my question.

I had planned to disassemble my vacuum wiper motor to clean it, and did so yesterday.

After cleaning it I couldn't remember what I had read that should be used for lubrication. Was it petroleum jelly, brake fluid, or mineral oil?

Of course a seach revealed Vaseline. Thanks.

Motor now works like a charm. Surprising how much gunk is in those things.

Some in the past have made a sealed coffee can e/w two tubes to act as a 'reservoir' to help the vacuum process store more vacuum.
