While I do like the rumble at low rpm, I don't like the noise at the higher end. What are you guys/gals using that gives you that nice rumble but yet you can get out of the neighborhood without waking the dead? | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 47 Member | Member Joined: May 2001 Posts: 47 | Wake them up. If I can't sleep neither can they.I have my two smitty glass paks still in the box. Run straight pipes and save the $$. If you run the pipes striaght out the back and you won't hear them as bad inside the cab. SO my vote is STRAIGHT. I can still carry on a comfortable conversation inside, and it just cackles slightly out back. On my 52, I've got performance mufflers, and they have a lower more mellow, V-8 sound. | | | | Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 375 Wrench Fetcher | Wrench Fetcher Joined: Apr 2004 Posts: 375 | | | | | Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 1,820 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Sep 2003 Posts: 1,820 | It does seem to make a difference as to how you "exit" or terminate the exhaust. I have tried it several ways and even with steel packs like I run, which are l-o-u-d, straight out the back is not that loud. If you run them out the side or terminate them anywhere under the body or bed or in the back of the rear fender of the truck, they are louder than if you terminate beyond the furthest most rear point of the truck. Alvin - are you really running straights? I've thought of running straights but I haven't had the guts to do it! That is really the 50's sound!!!!

The pipes are 2" (outside diameter). So that's probably 1 7/8" inside??? At high rpm she sounds like one of those Honda's the kids are driving. It sounds more like a high pitch vibration than anything. | | | | Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Oct 2003 Posts: 445 | how about Supertraps.there tuneable.I run 3 1/2 " outlet on a 350

I can go to a show or cruise and everyone loves it. A couple guys in the club have actually CUT OFF THEIR MUFFLERS saying they love the way it sounds. I also truly have a set of Smitty's that I ordered from Custom Supply out of Florida. I just can't bring myself to put them on. You were right to about how you exit the pipes. I had a set on a 78 once that turned out behind tires like original and I couldn't stay in the truck with glasspaks. Ran them Straight out the back and it wasn't so bad. I may never put mufflers on my 37 | | | | Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 Shop Shark | Shop Shark Joined: Apr 2005 Posts: 926 | Try using some glaspacks that are straight through, and just slide 'em way down the exhaust pipes until the pipes come through the other end, then clamp 'em;add your tailpipes and hangers. VOILA! Straight pipes sound-but it has mufflers! From experience... James | | | | Joined: May 2005 Posts: 4 Junior Member | Junior Member Joined: May 2005 Posts: 4 | A fifties trick I have heard of is this. With a six with a split manifold keep the stock muffler on one pipe and a glasspack on the other. Or a glasspack and straight pipe. 3 cylinders sound off while the other 3 are sudued. blo blo BLAH BLAH BLAH blo BLAH sound. | | |
