I need some info on the rear end in my '62 GMC. I looked in my book, it has general repair and re-building of rear ends, but it doesnt really go into detail which ones were used on this truck. From looking at a picture, it looks like a Spicer single speed rear end, but I dont know the model number. Is there a number on the rear end somewhere?

gmcfan: The 1/2 ton serial number is located on the front, right side of the differential carrier. Example MA 0420 MA = 3.90:1 ratio 04 = Month built (April) 20 = Day built(20th)The ratio codes are as follows: MB,ME=3.38:1 MA,MC,MD,MF,MG=3.90:1 MT,MU=4.11:1 The letter/number codes will be stamped, not cast. Take a flashlight, WD-40 and a small piece of scotchbrite and a wire brush with you. Hope this helps. taskforcetrucks wink cool

I spent two hours looking for that number. No luck. I pretty much cleaned the thing completly off, and now it is spik and span. Am I missing something? is it somewhere on the lip where the drive shaft comes in? I found a tag on one of the bolts that hold the cover on the carrier. I found out that it just shows how many teeth are on the gears. The numbers are 46-13. Below that is the number 3.54. Is this the ratio? frown

Looks like you have 3.54 to 1 ratio same as my 65 GMC. Mine is a Dana 44 ten bolts on rear cover.

If it's a Dana it will have the model number (44, 60, etc.) cast into the pumpkin webbing. Dana did use tags for the ratio.

I looked on the pumpkin, and on the top on the right side, i found a number that reads "44-1" I dont know if this is a model number, but I have included a drawing of the location of the number.

gmcfan: You must have a Dana 44. Should have 10 bolts on the housing and the Dana 60 has 12, I think. Back in the 70's I used to have a 62 GMC 1/2 ton with 305 V-6, and 4 spd. and a Spicer rear 4.11to1 (MT Model) and coil spring rear suspension. I bought the truck from my Dad, who had bought it NEW. Anyway one day the pinion went south, so I went to a GMC dealer and mechanic told me I needed a new carrier. Went to wrecking yard and found one in a 60 GMC, also a Spicer MT. I was told at the time that all 60,61,and 62 had Spicer rears and that GMC used Dana rears in 63 when they changed back to leaf rear suspension. I don't know, it might just be one of those weird GM things of using different parts (2 different rears) during transition year of model, or part change, in that model. They have done that kind of thing lots of times before. I would advise checking with your local GMC or Chevy dealer and/or website for advise/help!!! smile

Yup, that's a Dana 44. I had one in my Willys. Lots of nice locking and limited slip differentials available for that axle. Also full floating kits and disc brakes. The Jeep crowd loves it. On Dana axles, the -1 stood for semifloating and -2 stood for full floating.
