Ok, so this doesn't really affect us? Since none of our trucks are 76 or newer? That is still pretty new and I wouldn't consider them classics. So 60s musclecars and our trucks are still in the clear? For now?

Looks to me like the law is directed at cars that orginally came with pollution-control devices. Owners are required to keep these cars tuned to original standards/specifications. At least this law is not "changing the rules" on anyone.

One negative consequence that I can imagine is that more rodders and modifiers will now be directed to chopping up (actually, I guess the better term would be rodding-out) old metal.

Governor Leavitt was supporting similar requirements in Utah before he left to head the EPA. I need to research this as they may already be in effect. Right now only the more populated counties require an emmissions test. It's not required in my county yet, but I expect that may change. The one I don't particularly like would be to require pre-emission vehicles to pass if you swap to an engine built since emmision-regulation started though I expect it might be tough to enforce.

Here in Texas, we have emissions requirements on all vehicles manufactured in the past 25 years. So rolls forward each year. Good thing really--our air quality is deteriorating rapidly--particularly bad in the summers and antique vehicles (very small percentage of polluters) are exempted. What I have observed is that it requires people to maintain their pollution control equipment.

Here in NY outside of the NYC area,only 1995 and newer get tested, other years get a visual once a year for emission equipment if required.
Nothing wrong with requiring vehicles to perform properly, leave some clean air for the future generations.
Got a vintage vehicle? get rid of the road draft tube now, add a PCV system,1/2 the emissions from old engines comes from crankcase vapors.

I think the "rolling forward" of the 25 years needs to STOP at 1974, ie.. 1974 is the last smog exempt year... there are not that many "good"/classic, ect vehicles from then on anyway...

My brother has a 1976 chevy truck that had an electrical fire a year ago. He was waiting untill jan.1 of next year to register it so he would not have to replace all the smog stuff on it.

that is exactly the problem.. people not maintaining the smog equipment on their vehicles.. it was put there for a reason...and if properly maintained does it's job.

Except that early 70s smog crap made the cars run bad in most cases. And not last etc.

Please don't be smug and think "my truck is older than 74, so I'm OK"!

The anti-car lobby believe cars and trucks are evil inventions and they are working hard to bring their views to legislators. The pre-74's may be OK for now, but what's next? They may lobby the gov't to ban us from the road unless we are in a parade. We need to remain vigilent and fight these guys.
