Hey everyone, especially you Truckedup as I also am interested in British Bikes as well (I have a 1971 Triumph Tiger/Daytona highly modified in the finest British tradition) On to the current subject. I have a 1951 Chevrolet 3/4 Ton that I swapped out the 216 cu.in for a 1958 283 cu.in. over 25 years ago and have been very pleased with the power to weight ratio and the front to rear weight distribution. Additionally I converted the single reservoir Master cylinder to a dual reservoir. Now I would like to change the Steering to Rack and Pinion from the old bump steering. pitman arm drag link technology and convert to disc brakes. Anyone "KNOW" of any quality conversion kits available?

Welcome Chesedog--

I've always stayed with straight axles myself but there are several suppliers making kits for AD IFS conversions--I've heard TCI is highly recommended but have no experience. Someone will be along shortly with experience and advice I'm sure. Welcome. wink

Are you looking to replace the front suspension with IFS, or just upgrade the steering? I only see steering in your question.

You can put disk brakes on the original straight axle, but rack and pinion steering on a straight axle creates some engineering challenges.

Think about how rack and pinion works, and then think about where the rack would need to be mounted. To prevent bump steer the rack would almost have to be mounted on the axle, increasing unsprung weight, and making the connection to the steering column tricky. Mounting the rack on the frame is more complicated and I'm not convinced it could be done successfully.

If you are committed to rack and pinion you probably want to convert to an IFS at the same time.

Steve - What is involved in putting disc brakes on the 3/4 ton straight axle?
