When you get a letter, like I did from my rental's garbage company, saying: You have 30 days from the above date to pay this bill or we will send it to lien. And the letter is dated the 7th, then until what date do you have to pay?

Well, I paid it and they cashed the check on the 6th. Then I get my bill and it says we sent it to lien anyway and applied the money to your future bill.

Wait a minute.

30 Minutes on hold later: "But ma'am, if your letter is dated the 7th and it gives me 30 days to pay then how come you sent it to lien on the 1st?

"Because we always send them on the first"

"But, but, that is less than 30 days. Then why do tell people they have 30 days and only give them 23?

"Well, you didn't pay the $30 lien fee"

"But, there shouldn't be a lien fee because you shouldn't have sent it to lien. The letter never mentioned any additional fees"

"Well sir, I will have to go talk to my superiors and see if we can credit the lien fee and withdraw the lien. I am not sure that will work but I will try. I will call you back".

It sounds like you have a good case in small claims court if they are going to be jerks about it.

It's a fact of life that today everyone is making big money on late fees. Late fees are pure profit. Most such fees are unregulated and lenders or others who are owed can charge what they want.

My new, but soon to be ex cell phone company recently turned off my two phones cause the payment was "late". They charged me $35 each to reconnect them.

I mailed the payment the day I got the bill, but it was still late cause they don't process personnel checks right away. It is their internal "policy" to hold checks till they clear the bank. That makes the payment late and then they can charge the reconnect fee....And it's all legal.

Slick, huh?

Many banks, credit card companies and businesses have caught on to the huge profits involving "late" fees. They exploit them fully.

Late fees suck... The USMC Club system went to a single source credit card company... sounded like a good deal, until the late fees ($20 a pop) started... consider that it takes a solid 2 weeks to turn a letter around from Japan... and they dont even care... dirty rat's.

In the early 80's I was in the Navy living in Norfolk Virginia. I had bought a house when interest was 16%.

One day a man named Runnels knocked on my door and offered me a great deal to refinance. So I signed all his papers and we waited.

In a few months I was being foreclosed on. I was going to lose my house! Turns out Runnels was a fraud and a rip off. He had refinanced my house, but not paid off the old loan. They were coming after me for it.

I chased him down in his office. I tore his office apart. I beat him badly.

Several hundred folks lost their homes to him and his wife. Now he is out of jail and ripping folks off again with hyno stuff. BEWARE! I still owe him a broken nose.

They should have given you a must date, like due date is such and such and if not paid , then late dues may be added,, what is a rental garbage company,, do you not have a city pick-up,mine is in with the water, gas, electric,guess ever state is different,,and also, do they mean 30 working days, or just 30 days,good luck with it,,Fred

I meant the garbage bill for my rental. Here the landlord is responsible for the garbage bill.

Yeh, heaven forbid they'd want to scam some flakey renters, they'd skip. Let's fleece the guy that owns the joint!!

If you have rental property,you should have a good pit bull attorney.Usually in a case like this just mentioning that you will be hearing from my attorney will clear the situation right up.I had a claim against a tire company a few years ago,they owed me a few hundred dollars.I called them several times and they kept putting me off.I called one day and told them I just talked to my attorney and he would love to take this case.Three days later I received the check.Just something to think about when you know you are right.

We got rid of our Discover Card when we "discovered" that not only did the payment have to be received on a given date, but by 10:00 a.m. on that date. If the mail is delivered at 13:00 you're screwed.

Back when I was young and poor (old and poor now) we had a doctor who charged a $5.00 late fee if your payment didn't reach him by the 1st. I got paid the last day of the month and for a couple months was being billed $5.00 a month because I was late paying the late charge.

I asked them to waive the charge, and when they refused I found a new doctor. I believe in voting with my dollars.

Dealing with monopolies is tougher.

Did you tell the garbage company that you cleaned out the house and lost your wallet when taking the garbage out?
