I have a mint '58 GMC 2.5 ton with a seized 270 and a Muncie SM420. I am negotiating long distance on a low mileage 292 from a '66 Chev 5 ton (attached to a NPC96051 5-speed).
Will the 292 just 'bolt up' ? Are the external dimensions such as block length, motor mounts, bolt holes to bellhousing, etc. the same ?
Anything else I need to know ?
As a secondary question, would there be any advantage (or ease or feasability) in swapping to the NP transmission - like overdrive ? Or, would this tranny just be too big ? My truck has a 'flat floor'.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure the bellhousing attached to the 270 will not fit the 292. I don't know if the bellhousing between the 292 and that 5-speed will fit the SM420.
I'm quite sure you can get a bellhousing for the 292 that will bolt to the SM420. I say that because the SM420 was still used into the middle '60's. You'd need one from about '63 to maybe '66.
The question is will that bellhousing bolt to the crossmember in the '58. I'm sure it could be adapted.
I know I haven't helped much, but I hope my little bit of knowledge will help you get the answers you really need...

I think I'll still buy the 292 but save it for an AD pick-up or burb I want to find and build.
The bellhousing and 5-speed may yet go into my '58.
The '66 Chev 5 ton donor truck has been stripped down to the frame. I'll see if I can get the crossmembers from it and if they will fit my '58 with a small block chev ( I have a 305 and a 350 on hand).
I have also heard that the crossmember from a full-size Jimmy or Blazer will work.
Any knowledge on that one ?
