Howdy--

I'm changing the oil for the first time on a 235 with the oil canister. How do I clean the filter? And do I need to siphon out the remainder of the canister to get the sludge out of the bottom? Any tips?

Thanks

I used to siphon the stuff out of the bottom of the filter housing. What a mess. Prolly unneeded if there isnt too much sludge. Look at it this way: 99% of the filter housings never got cleaned, just had a new filter cartridge stuffed in. And don't overtighten the filter housing, the rubber gasket will leak. You may have to re-tighten to prevent a slight leak, but its better not to put your back into it the first time you tighten it down. But lube that rubber gasket like you would a normal oil filter ring gasket.

The one in the canister is some cloth-looking, bag-type thingie with a wire handle at the top to pull it out (how's that for a technical description?). It doesn't look very replaceable and I haven't seen one in any catalogs. Any idea on how to clean it?

Thanks

If its like the filter units I've seen hanging off the 235 manifold, the cartridge is replacable. The filter element should be "impaled" on a center tube in the housing. Simply pull that fold-down handle and the whole thing will come out. I think the correct Wix part number is 15005 or 5005 or 505 something close to that.

59redtruck,

There are several different filter sizes for the various brand/years of canister-style filters. Try a "search" in this forum for "oil filter" or "canister".

The Fram canisters did not drain back into the block (at least that is the case for some, if not all Fram canisters). To clean out the oil and sludge in the bottom of these Fram canisters, Fram sold a siphon pump, "The Sludge Siphon". These are seen on eBay every so often.

I took the entire unit off, cleaned it and brought it in to napa to get a replacement cannister. They had it in stock.

I use a siphon gun to suck mine out, finish with a rag or paper towel. You can get the siphon gun at most farm stores or some parts stores. It's the size of a grease gun. Wix 51006 (Napa 1006) fits my Fram unit.

Albert you tell me now I should not use mothers turkey paster. I could avoided another family war if I would known that.

There is a new thread
What did we find in mothers kitchen and ended up in our work shop.
