Hi Everybody, I am asking for ideas to remove the glue ( I suspect it is contact adheasive ) from the vinyl on the door panels I got from JC last year. I would like to reuse the Spainish grain vinyl for arm rests or something. The material is perfectly good, the d#%n glue just won't stick to anything. I plan on useing the hi temp trim adhesive that Alan suggested to glue it to my project. Any ideas would be appreciated, Jimmie.

for contact cement - might also find a product called "Goof Off" that seems to remove various glues from a lot of theing

3M makes a product that is very good for removing adhesive. I buy it at my local trim supply wholesale house. It is called 3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner Part No. 051135-08984. According to the can label it is for removing: adhesive, silicone, wax, grease, tar and oil. I have used it successfully to remove the yellow colored type of adhesive that is used in the upholstery business and for weather stripping. It works very well without much effort.

Thanks for the response. The general purpose cleaner sounds like the best option. Amyl acetate as suggested on the web site or carbon teterachloride, or a number of other cleaners while effective are now hard to find or prohibited unless you have a class 3 chemical permit.
I will give it a shot cleaning the vinyl. Even if I ruin it, it is not a big loss. It just chaps my rootie kazoo that purvayors to a nich market use substandard materials, and pass them off as "good as original" Jimmie.

Addedem: is it rootie kazoo or rootie kazootie? It has been a few decades since I thought of that childrens story, or being read to by my grandmother from the book Collections of the Brothers Grimm. Jimmie.

If you have Farm & Fleet out you way they carry the "3M General Purpose Adhesive Cleaner Part No. 051135-08984" that Joe mentioned. I just picked up a Qt. can of it a few weeks ago, it is specificly made for removing trim adhesive.

p.s. Just as an addendum, I ordered a set of the “Corinthian Leather” door panels for my '50 when I ordered the upholstery set. They’re back ordered, and I’m just wondering if the reason is that they were having problems with them like you described and they decided to pull them until it's straighened out.

I enjoy reading your posts a lot. It seems we are in roughly the same stage of restoration. We don't have Farm & Fleet out here in Colorado. At least that I know of. I am about 300 miles from Denver, And about the same to Salt Lake City. I have not heard of Farm & Fleet except here on the web site. I probably can find the solvent someplace locally. I ordered my "Spanish Grain" seat covers from Jim Carter. I loved the seat cover. It matched the original to a T. The door panels were a different story. They said it would take 2 to 3 weeks to get them in stock. It took 8 weeks. That was not the first problem I had with JC. I may get flamed for this, but I HAVE HAD REALLY ROTTEN LUCK WITH JIM CARTER. It seems everybody else has been happy with JC. As far as the door panels I talked to a "manager" not just a phone flunky, and was assured that as soon as the problem was solved I would get new ones. That was a year ago. To be fair all of the other venders said it would be at least 4 weeks for seat covers.
Joker, Thanks for your input. If it was on glass I would scrape it off. Plus I have access to restricted use chemicals. So I am sure I could find a solvent to take off the residue. The problem is that the glue is on a piece of vinyl. I can remove the glue with solvents, but may dissolve the glue and vinyl. I know just enough about chemistry to be dangerous. lol. I will check with some of the people I work with and see what they say. Jimmie.
