I've had several 54's and the 55 1st that I'm workin on now, and none of them ever had a jack that came with the truck. I have a tire iron that the PO on this truck claims is OE. It's truly a tire iron and not just a lug wrench. It has only one lug end and chisel end for popping rubber from rim and dealing with bead rings. But, to anyone's knowledge, was a tire iron and jack standard equipment? I've never even seen an accessory option. I know the simple tool bag was an option...or was that standard too, and most have just been lost? I always wondered why they didn't put that handy tool box under the seat in the pickups, like they did in the panels and burbs...seems there is so much wasted space under the seat of these trucks!

Yeh it had the jack mount, but no jack though. One of the PO added some extra storage under the seat in my 54 GMC as well, it is a rectangular metal box that drops down through the floor under the seat. Does this sound like what the panels and burbs had under their seats?

It does not state what the non-15"-wheel 3100s used for a tire changing iron? Tim | | | | | Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 168 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Sep 2001 Posts: 168 | Thanks Tim! I'll be keepin my eye out for one of those...my question is...where was it stored? They didn't just leave it loose under the seat did they? Or stuffed down in a cab corner? What about the tool bag, was that standard equipment, or an option? I've almost pulled the trigger on an NOS bag several times and just couldn't do it because they go for so much...

If you'd like to get one, Bob at Bob's Chevy Parts is the guy to call. He offers the jack and handle either "as is" or "reconditioned" $60 bucks/$100 bucks. He claims that they used to be stowed under the seat, and they came in a bag that was imitation leather or something similar. He said he's never seen one of the bags thats not been rotten, but they were just loose under the seat! Anyway, his site is www.bobschevyparts.com the site is nothing to write home about, but he's a really nice old guy. His number is 440-632-1080. -Josh

I am not sure how much longer they were even available. But if you have a restoration pack, it will list the available options. My pack also describes the jack that came with the truck. | | | | | Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,300 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Aug 2001 Posts: 1,300 | Tim's pictures are correct. A very, very long time. Until at least the early 70s, if not longer. I found a medium-duty version in the free low-mileage '55.1 4400 rustball, it's going in my panel. | | |
