Changing oil this morning the drain plug (1/2" 20) would not tighten up, threads are gone on the pan side. My tool box had a (1/2 15)so with a new washer, some pipe tape I put it back in. I don't dare over tighter, and it still drips. Will a helicoil work? Or another idea.

It doesn't use the pan threads but it compresses a rubber collar which expands and makes a nice leak proof seal. | | |

There are slightly oversize, self-tapping pan plugs that will cut new threads as they're installed. Dorman Products used to make a line of these plugs, but they've changed company names recently, and I don't remember the new name.

They also had a 3/4" Universal for $6.19 for bigger holes. Its almost like a toggle bolt whereby you slip in the rubber fitting and tighten up on the wing nut and hope for the best, we'll see tonight.

#16177 03/01/2004 8:37 PM | Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 327 Cruising in the Passing Lane | | Cruising in the Passing Lane Joined: Mar 2001 Posts: 327 | I think what your talking about is actually a "plumbing thing" (I am no plumber) But I once needed to replace the soft plugs that were in behind the motor mounts on a 351 modified and couldn't get the soft plugs in with the engine in the truck so I went to a plumbing outlet and found what I needed. Worked great. Still is- it is my own 78 F-250 Custom 4x4.

Highly recommend. PS suggestion: after you finish filing there is bound to be some shavings in the pan. Dump a quart of oil thru the engine and let it drain good. This will give you some peace of mind and may pick up a few shavings along the way.

Just stick it into the drain hole and move it around, then clean off the filings and repeat.
