I thought this worked out good. The switch for the heater fits up where the THROTLLE cable was. The pull out that came with the heater switch fits this old chromed knob w/setscrew. Now its NOT mounted under the dash on a cable bracket. The heater works well. I have the stock heater on the defrost vents. Both on the fuse block. ACC

here is the spare in my 59 panel. I doubt it would have fit under there if the dual exhaust was not mounted under the wheel wells outside the leaf springs

I`m gonna swap out this sm 319 for a saginaw 3 speed. Picking it up from the legend Larry Richards The original "Outlaw". Nice fella. I`ll just have to modify the shift mounting bracket but he has extra brackets. joeverdegan.com/larry-richards-an-original-grand-national-outlaw/ www.facebook.com/reel/1653768723068617

I`ll have to weld on and extend that one bracket eyelet to mount the shifter bracket to the side cover. The trany will push my shifter location back about 3/4 inch which is no big deal. Got the old one out today. Larry was telling about those muncie sm 318/319 and the difference between those and the saginaw. He would not want to work on the muncies. Larry is 71 now and still working hard. He rebuilds these 3 speeds and 4 speeds for racing and driving and ships to Milwaukee 10 or 12 at a time.
I should have it running tomorrow. The sm 319 sounded like the bearing seal was or gone bad.

pics. The shifter brackets holes were too small for the plastic bushing so those got drilled larger. Much tighter shift than before. I need to figure out how to get the speedometer working. Looks plugged . I have everything for the speedo. Any methods for removing that plug?

BD - That looks like a pressed in compression plug. The bore it's in is smooth, not threaded as these later transmissions used a speedometer driven gear "plug" that was retained by a flat metal tab secured by a bolt directly behind the port opening. See screenshot below for components, not including the speedo drive/driven gears.
Can you post pictures of what you have for your speedo setup?

Larry got me what I needed. Linkage rods, speedometer gears , fine spline slip yoke , levers. Us old guys around here have to stick together and help one another. I just lucky to be surrounded by all this racing/engine talent. I used the speedo housing from the other trany. Getting the plug out of the saginaw 3 sp. was an experience. Thanks Dan , thats the one I have. I had another but its from a muncie and longer with a metal tube and gear. So I`m rolling down the highway again , with a few weeks to drive. Maybe more the way things are with the weather. That heater will get me further. If you get a chance ,look up Larry Richards and him having a heart attack while racing. Finished the race. Outlaw legend. Racing Hall of fame. He and his son. We talked at length this morning. The man has got the chevy cars BIG blocks. All double headlight side by sides. Which is my thing with trucks. Its an intimidating look.
