Was this heavy duty cattle guard mounted on the small AD trucks?

If so, how did it fasten to the front bumper? I see the rear braces.

Also, how was the cattle guard finished; painted black or silver?

I think someone posted about one of those before here. My suspicion is that the two tabs on the bottom get bolted on just behind the bumper supports using longer bolts.

Luke - In my info searching, that particular style of "brush grille guard" was offered as an accessory for the 4000 series and up AD trucks, There was a different style/design "Commercial truck" (3000 Series) shown in the first pic below offered on this page from the 1951 Chevy Accessories Manual - Commercial Truck Grille Guard.

The "Utility truck" (4000 Series and up) "brush grille guard" installation instructions for 1951 start on this page 1951 Chevy Accessories Manual - Utility Truck Grille Guard, with the second picture below showing that design installed. To the best of my knowledge these guards were painted black.

The one you have pictured looks like a replica of the original "Big Bolt" style unit with some added touches like the Chevy emblem and "C" and could have been built to fit the smaller "commercial trucks".

Kevin's suggestion on mounting makes sense. The upper support bars would likely pass through the grille and get bolted directly to the frame rearward of the radiator support, perhaps???

Dan (and Kevin)...

Thanks for the information. I had a nice "picket fence" grille guard mounted on my truck for a while. I then located a "Smash Hit", had it rechromed, and installed it on my truck.

It has been a mystery (to me at least) as to who made the heavy duty grille guard with the "C" inside of the Chevy bowtie. I am wanting to save this particular grille guard, that I recently located, from the scrap or recycle pile and make it worth my time to pick it up in New York.

Any knowledge as to who made this heavy-duty style of grille guard and where it was manufactured?

This may not be for everyone...but I believe that it looks appropriate on a former road department service truck. I recently picked up this vintage grille guard in central New York on my way out to visit my son and his family in Connecticut. Minor repairs were made, straps made from stock steel bar for the rear braces, cleaned and painted, and new hardware used to fasten in place. I am going to run with it during the 2027 driving season. In the meanwhile, my "Smash Hit" grill guard will be on vacation until the jury makes it final decision.

I think it looks pretty cool combined with your door decal, emergency lights and Mickey Mouse ear turn signals.
