Hi All,
I recently acquired a '53 GMC that is "partly" converted to 12V. As of right now, the ignition circuit and engine runs on 12V, but that's about the sum of it. In light of this (and my general inexperience with wiring), I'm planning to purchase a replacement harness in the coming weeks to help with the conversion and repairing the wiring. I noticed that Jim Carter and Classic Parts both offer 12V Alternator harnesses, but details on what they do and don't do are kind of vague. Generally Jim Carter seems to have higher quality and more experience with AD trucks, but the difference is almost $100. Has anyone had experience with either harness? Able to tell me about the goods, bad, and "others" with either harness?

From what I can tell comparing the two is that the Jim Carter harness specifically mentions turn signal wiring, and they offer both GMC and Chevy harnesses, while Classic doesn't offer different harnesses for GMC and Chevy. Maybe the extra turn signal wiring is worth the extra money. Disclaimer: I have no experience with either one, having repaired and upgraded my original wiring harness myself.

I got the Jim Carter harness with the added turn indicator. I think Jim sources them from another vendor who is quite well regarded for their quality. I was quite pleased with the quality and the easy to follow directions.

And for what its worth, Jim Carter himself has been a greater supporter of Stovebolt.com for decades. Jim stands behind his stuff so if for some reason you have issues, his folks will work with you to make it right. He helped us during some rough times and has been a personal friend of mine for years.

I'm not sure but Jim might still be offering a 10 percent discount to Stovebolters.

FYI, Jim Carter does offer a discount to veterans and military. Call them to set that up.

Appreciate the responses, I probably will end up going with the Jim Carter harness.
