The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Interiors Need a steering column 3 speed shifter arm for 1954 Chevy 3100

I just picked up a really clean and mostly original 1954 3100. The biggest issue I have right now is the shifter arm is broken off about 2-3" from the column. It has a piece of PVC pipe over the end to shift and it goes through the gears without issue but I need a new shifter arm/handle. I haven't seen these in the aftermarket unless I am looking in the wrong place. So are these specific to the AD trucks? And what years will fit the 54? Or is a car shifter the same? Any help is appreciated.

I would post a thread in the "Truck Parts Wanted" forum. Hopefully someone is in the process of cleaning out their truck parts and discover your thread.

Craig is right about posting an ad in the Swap meet's Truck Parts Wanted forum to see if someone can help you out on where to find a replacement shifter.

As to further details about "are these specific to the AD trucks?" and such, here's some info from pertinent Chevy Master Parts Books to help answer those questions.

A picture of the shifter handle and component break down is attached below from a 1929-57 Chevrolet Master Parts Catalog. Looking at the major component items that make up the shifter, Parts Group 4.006 - Lever assembly, shows that the same part number GM# 3686799 applies to all Commercial Trucks from 1948-53 and 1949-52 Chevy Passenger Cars.

So either range of vehicles can be a donor for the shifter parts you need.

Armed with this info, get that ad up in the Swap Meet and we can further help track down what you need.

EDIT NOTE - See corrected information below as this applies to 1953 and earlier trucks, not Golfball's '54.

Well there I go again, not paying close enough attention - duh!

Golfball's truck is a '54, which makes my input above not applicable for his truck.

A recheck of the 1929-57 Chevrolet Master Parts Catalog shows that the correct 3 speed shifter handle for his truck is GM# 3723916 which fits 1953-54 3 speed equipped Chevy Passenger cars (not Powerglide) and 1954-56 3 speed equipped Chevy Commercial Trucks.

So a different set of possible donor vehicles, but still should be easier to find than a truck specific shifter.

Just a follow-up FYI that there is a '53-'54 car 3 speed column shifter on ebay now in case you want to hit the easy button. It's got everything you need plus extras like the springs and such that may or may not need replacement on yours.

There's also what is said to be a '54 truck 3 speed shifter on Facebook for an even better price.

Gdads51, thanks so much for all that information, just what I needed to know. The main info I was looking for was what would fit or is compatible. I am looking online and there is a local guy with some parts but I am not sure what years his parts trucks are yet.

And shop manual getting ordered today.
