The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Making a Stovebolt Bed Preserving wood bed with used oil?

I'm sure this has been discussed before, however a quick search showed 400 results with everything but what I was looking for.

I seem to remember a discussion that using used motor oil is a good preservative for the wood bed in our trucks.

Pros and cons?

Used oil is sure the Poor Boy method.😀
Great for those who don’t mind the old oil smell.
An old friend of mine who owned a local sawmill, used to douse his machine shop floor that way. Wood plank floor, of course.
This was 50 or more years ago, and it still smells today, though Ralph is long gone.
I find it a pleasant and nostalgic smell ,though others may not.
But your descendants might like it!
