Looking at a 49 1/2 ton with a 235 high pressure engine. Trying to identify engine. I don't see a casting number on the RH side by the 3 threaded holes. There are some stamping numbers on the machined area 0269382 and then F547. I need a water pump and it looks like it is the style with a plate on the back of the pump, which is kind of like the 216 engine. If so, will the 216 pump work?

Look behind the starter for casting numbers. There should be a date code there consisting of a letter and two or three numbers. The letter indicates the month (A=Jan, B=Feb, etc.), the last number is the last digit of the year (9 for 1949 or 1959, etc) and the previous numbers the day of the month. Narrowing it down would be the casting numbers on the right front by the fuel pump.

This is the cast # on a early 261 , in front of the fuel pump, down low. Cast date in 2nd Pic (June 21, 1954)

The 216 waterpump will work as long as the pulley matches the size of/width of the harmonic balancer and generator. Your engine you will have to confirm with the casting number but looks to be 54 or early 55.

The F54 would be a Flint plant manufactured 235, but the "7" at the end doesn't match with what should be a letter.

texczech - I'm gonna suggest your last character on the end of the engine serial number sequence is a "Z" and not a "7". A little extra cleaning on the pad should confirm what it is. As noted in the below extracts from the GM Heritage files, the first numerals "0269382 is the sequential unit number, the "F" indicates it was built at the Flint plant, "54" indicates the model year and the last character(s) after the 54 indicate what the engine was originally installed in.

A "Z" 1954 235 would have been a passenger car "Regular" 235 installed with a 3 speed manual transmission (if it had been equipped with a Powerglide automatic transmission it would have ended in "Y"). The engine should have a solid lifter cam too.

The 7 is a Z. It now makes sense. The only casting number is somewhat blocked by the starter, something like A234.There is no casting number in the usual place by the three threaded holes on that side. I looked at some of the 235 engines I have stored and they have casting numbers in that "pocket" by the 3 threaded holes. Thank You for the help in this matter!

I'm guessing the numbers by the starter = January 23, 1954 production date.

John (UtahYork) got it exactly right on the block date code.

On the actual block casting number, IIRC for the ‘54 it’s located farther forward on the passenger side of the block. Look just above the oil pan mounting flange ridge in front of the fuel pump location. wink

If the "three threaded holes on the side" are for side motor mounts, then your date code would be Jan 23, 1964 as side motor mounts started in 1958.

Post a picture of the passenger side of you engine.

But didn't Chevy quit making the 235 at the end of the 1962 model year?

1952-1954 235 did have side engine mounts. The mounting hole locations in the block were different from 1958-1962 235.
