What are these holes for along the bottom of the tailgate? I've looked at them for several years and didn't think a lot about them until I mounted my new 1950 Georgia license plate yesterday.

They appear to be factory made because they are seem to be too perfect and too precisely spaced to have been done with a hand drill.

The only thing weird is that they are not symmetrical or centered with the tailgate. They are 6 and 1/4 in from the edge of the tailgate on the right and four and 5/8 in from the edge of the tailgate on the left. However they are all perfectly 7 and 7/8 inches on center.

The smaller hole to the bottom right of the line of holes is obviously drilled by some farmer. It's verysloppy and the metal is all gunched up around it. The "factory" holes are perfectly smooth.

Somebody added a angle iron to the bottom of the tail gate.

Maybe to cover up some rusted metal at the bottom of the tailgate and this was a patch job?

I didn't even realize that the whole bottom part of the tailgate is supposed to be a tube. Yes, it looks like an angle iron or something was welded over the top part of that tube.

The truck spent its life on a farm actually working into the 1980s or 90s. Maybe theyufixed a rusty area or needed the flat surface to mount some attachment or other.
