By the way... save the old tranny. There are probably good gears there that are getting scarcer by the day.

@GregBoston
I don't know if you ever got the right clutch alignment tool. I never did find mine, but today was looking at the Dorman 14522 and actually tried to contact Dorman about the pilot size. The e-mail to their tech support didn't go thru. I left a message on their support number (closed for the day). The Oreilly website said my local said they had one in stock, so I got my digital caliper and went down there. It turns out they didn't have one, but the kid behind the counter started digging and came up with a Pioneer TAT-5301. It said it was 9/16" pilot, with 10 splines and 1-1/8" OD. It measured 0.58, a few thousandths bigger than 9/16", on the pilot stub I bought it and it fit perfectly. Dorman just needs to get their s### together and publish the full specs. They lost out on a sale.

Anyway, hope that helps you. Now that I've bought another one to replace the missing one, it will turn up. wink But it was only $10. and I can get my clutch and tranny installed.

Thanks for all the reply’s. Been slow going with vacations/post retirement but I bought a clutch kit which came with alignment tool. I like the bolt alignment trick and need to get my flywheel resurfaced. I didn’t know you could.

Flip starter ring ear over is a great idea,or I see new ones are available. I wonder if my worn clutch (was at end of adjusting) or pilot bushing were causing 2nd to 3rd grinding issues? I plan to install flywheel and starter and make sure no grinding during cranking. If that’s good I will install original trans and see what happens. If still shift issues grinding up shifting or downshifting between 2nd and 3rd, I'll install used transmission or time to take apart transmission and keep learning.

Happy New Year everyone. Slow progress but this truck was supposed to be in driving condition when I bought to kick off retirement but after ten miles of driving realized it wasn't. It needs a lot of love to be driven safely down the road again. For those going to smokey mountain TN AD meet I plan to be there.

Here is an update. Installed the 12 Volt flywheel (resurfaced) and 12 V starter (integral solenoid) I picked up from used engine/trans. I tested cranking it over and it spins over fine with this setup. I will revisit getting a new ring gear for 6V flywheel and reinstall with 6 volt starter later so I can go back to floor pedal start. Installed new pilot bushing and torqued flywheel in place. Next up install rest of clutch and original transmission and setup floor pedal travel.

The rear brakes dragging that prevented truck from easily rolling into my garage was caused by over adjusted brakes but I will open a new thread on that one after finishing this job. I have a mess going on with melted rear shoes and likely wrong dual master by previous owner looks jury rigged.

I'm going to see if any improvement have been made getting rid of grinding between 2-3 up/down with new clutch. If grinding persists I will remove original trans and hopefully between the original and my used spare I can get this going again and move on to brake rehab. Thanks for the help.
