Can you mix gas tank sending unit with different gauges, as long as the ohms match.

I have 80 chevy fuel tanks and sending unit and will be running datsun 280z gauges

How do I check the ohms

As long as the sender is compatible with the gauge you will be okay. First determine which year 280z and then figure out the ohm rating of that fuel gauge. Some 280z used 0-90 ohms. On the 1980 Chevy fuel tank, most of those used 0-90 ohm senders...but not every one of the GM products did, so it is a good idea to check. To check ohms, get a handheld multi-tester, select the ohm setting (looks like a horseshoe) and then select the max number of ohms you wish to test for (in your case probably it will be 200 ohms). You can use the needle probes to find out the ohms of the sender. Connect one to the central post of the sender (where it comes out of the tank) and the other to the body of the unit (would be ground) and move the float up to the "full" position. You will see the ohms on the multi-tester window. Good luck.
