I just purchased a 54 GMC dually truck. Although it needs a lot of work, the bones are pretty solid. It originally came with a hydromatic transmission, which I was able to find in Texas, and I want to install soon. Meanwhile, I have ordered new floor panels, corner cabs, inner and outer door bottom skins.
I'm sure I will be reaching out for some help as this project progresses, which may be quite a while since I am also in the process of building a new 48' x 63' shop. I have attached pics, and if anyone can help me with identifying any info about the truck off of the serial #, that would be a great start.

JayCee - As I did a bit of digging to offer some info on your "generator question" in the Electrical Bay, I went ahead and did some decoding of your pictured data plate to help ID your truck. The decoding, done with the help of this Old GMC resource web page, breaks down as follows for your ID "253-24 S Z1121"
25 = 1 Ton 3 = 137" wheel base 24 = 248 engine S = Built at the St. Louis, MO plant Z = 1954 Model year 1121 = 120th 1 Ton off the St. Louis line for 1954
Hope this info is of some help.

Z could be 1st series 1955 as well, but not likely being the 120th built.

Hey new guy, welcome to the ‘bolt. I like your truck and good for you for saving it. I’ll be sitting around with nothing to do while waiting for updates and progress photos.
Welcome JC, I'm just south of Fulton Mo. and may have some parts you could use. PM me and we can chat. Also check out the Midwest Bolter's threads. We are setting up for our Annual Stovebolt Round Up September 13th at Mongo's garage. I'll have my 53 1-ton there and there will be several other guys that are redoing the bigger trucks there, OldieOldie for one and Mongo is a great source for parts. As a added bonus, Jim Carter should also be there to chat with. His store is less than a mile away.
Don't be a stranger, we are here to help! Don
Edit: I forgot to say, the Round Up is in Independence, Mo. No need to bring a truck just be there as it is a very educating day with several truck related seminars presented.
