The hit meter has skyrocketed again. So I ran my little script that finds the worst offenders:
277397 66.249.73.5 - Google
157074 66.249.69.36 - Google
151847 66.249.73.6 - Google
75773 66.249.73.7 - Google
38277 66.249.73.8 - Google
36555 66.249.69.37 - Google
21568 66.249.73.9 - Google
10722 66.249.73.10 - Google
7429 199.47.82.18 - Turnitin
7322 66.249.69.38 - Google

This is really disgusting to me. Why in the world does Google think it's OK to hammer websites like this? I've about had enough of them. And they have no facility in place for website admins to report this abuse and ask them to stop probing so aggressively.

I need to know if performance on the site has been slow over the past 24 hours. If it has, I may just have to block Google entirely.

Performance has been relatively normal from HQ.

I'm seriously shocked that Google even bothers with us. After we took Google away as the search engine for Stovebolt, and dropped the AdSense, and their stats program, we saw the number of hits to the site go down. In the last few years, it seemed if you use Google to search, and type "old truck resto" questions, Stovebolt does not show up. It USE to be, we got a ton of traffic from G -- all at the top of the page! But we were not going back to G - no way.
