Has anyone used the hood hold open supports? Part# ms508 sold by Jim Carter. I’m confused on where they would be positioned and how they’re used.
I’m looking for an option to support the hood securely and more open than resting the tip on the cowl.

I did see that someone asked the same question on a facebook group and a picture was shared.
I not sure that I would use it, based on it contacting painted areas.
Has anyone made there own and have a picture to share?

I have a similar wood hood prop, works great…
top is rounded over and has a rubber strap looped and tacked to protect the paint inside the hood, the bottom notch is reinforced with a dowel to prevent splitting.

Rick - Here's a really OLD thread on your subject. A fair bit of conversation on the topic, which doesn't seem to provide a conclusive answer, but you may glean some useful info to answer your question.

I recently installed these hood props. I removed the radiator supports to install them. They're not contacting paint on the bottom of the hood. I use the round rod for the locks to rest it on. I'll get some pictures.

I did read that link on the props, but you were correct. It wasn’t that helpful. Here are pictures of what I found on eBay for $133. I will try to make my own version of something similar.

Fannin, your use shows a better position to put the top of the support, than the sample pic I sent. When it’s stored on the driver side, is the voltage regulator in the way?

It just kinda lays on top of the regulator.

There is a Tech Tip titled “Hood Prop” here in the SB that shows detailed instructions on making the ones referenced above. My effort in making that particular one was abandoned after deciding I didn't want to go through the installation hassle. A simpler use of custom fit wooden props was used instead. They work fine, but require careful placement. I am not convinced I like that option either. I’ll try to remember to get some photos when I get back to the shop in the coming days, if anyone is interested.

Thanks for the additional pic. I thought that’s how it might lay. It doesn’t interfere with the hood?

I do have my version of hood supports I am mocking up, I will share pics when I’m finished.

Here is my version of what I came up with for a hood prop. Consists of coupler nuts, 1/4” all thread and 1/8”x 1” flat bar. I like how it works, the rod is bent on purpose to lay in line with the radiator support brace. I haven’t thought of how to firmly store it in the relaxed position yet, (suggestions?).
Obviously it could be in the way when doing some work under the hood. I’m likely to still use the hood resting on the cowl with the rubber triangle at shows. Any comments appreciated.

As for securing it, I wonder if mounting a rare earth magnet to the “v” rod would work?
