I realize I can do what I want, and I actually prefer mine not painted. But I have seen a lot of pictures of the lines and lettering all being red. Can this style be considered era/ style correct? I have also seen letters red and lines blue or black. I ask because I did a show today and another participant was a representative of a local elite show, He said they added a strictly truck category (up to 1973). He was impressed enough with my restored to original truck that he suggested that I should submit an application with pictures to be considered for this event. I don’t know that I even stand a chance, but I would consider doing a few things to help my chances if necessary. Does anyone know for sure what was factory design, or your thoughts about it? The show is Des Moines Concours d’Elegance in Sept.
Rick - The below picture is copied from the GM Heritage 1946 Chevrolet Truck PDF. Drawing and lower description info provides the original Chevy finishes for your 1946 "upper grille".
The original piece is listed as Polished chrome plate with "Red" Baking Dulux paint for the letter and line recesses. As you said, the choice is yours, but if you are going for a "Concourse d' Elegance" show event, judging will include this level of detail.
Lots of info in the GM Heritage file to help you pre-inspect/self-judge your truck to help you show off your truck if that's what you decide to do.
