My truck sports a rebuilt 235 c.i. engine from 1955 truck. I suspect that I may not have the correct oil dipstick. Can someone provide a photo + dimensions of the proper dipstick for this engine? Where does one source an original, or are there good reproductions available?
To figure out if you have the right dipstick, drain the engine oil and then add 5 quarts of oil.
Let it sit there for a few hours or overnight.
Check the dipstick. If it's at the full mark, you're fine. If it's not on the full mark, make a new mark at the current level and use that.

Or if you buy or make a replacement, add 4 quarts of oil. Mark that line clearly. That will be your 1 quart low mark. Now add one more and mark that line after everything settles. That will be your full mark.

This older thread Dipstick and Tube info was started about 261's, but is the same for 235's according to the Chevy Master Parts Books and is good info to start with to answer your question.
Some further searching through later Chevy Master Parts books provides the below snap shot info showing the gauge stick and measuring points, the gauge measurement dimensions according to the diagram and the oil gauge tube dimensions (marked in red for your application - guessing your 1955 235 is a 2nd Series?).
As far as sourcing what you need, post an ad in Truck Parts Wanted or grab your tape measure and see what you might find in local salvage yards. Since they are both for trucks and passenger cars, you might just get lucky.

Does your engine have a canister filter? My 55.2 235 has the canister filter and takes 6 qts of oil to bring to the full mark. My dipstick matches the dimensions in Gdads51 Dipstick and Tube info link. I sucked out a little over a quart of oil from the canister after removing the filter.

Only 5 quarts of oil remain in the pan. The 6th quart stays in the canister. The dipstick should only measure 5 quarts.

Yup, The oil filter tank should have no affect on the dipstick reading.
