Bought one of these to see how it would do. Way over built. Should be made out of material half as thin, but it looks and feel like it will do the trick.
Need a little paint and some felt to stop any rubbing.

I like it. I didn’t think I really needed a cup holder but spilling coffee whilst driving my 51 has made me reconsider.
HF sells a magnetic one that looks decent. I’m gonna snag one and see how it works just sticking to the dash or door or such. The one nice thing about earlier interiors is they sure don’t lack ferrous surfaces.
I think it is a neat idea...BUT...as someone who spent several years with an accident investigation/safety engineering firm, the narrow edge of that plate that faces the occupants of the vehicle would be like a knife in an accident.
Perhaps one could weld a vertical piece of flat stock around/under the edge so any impact force would be attenuated over a larger area...so maybe it would still break you but wouldn't cut you as badly.
(Don't want to be a downer, but the autopsy photographs were memorable.)

Below is a link to my cup holder. The Mrs was getting tweaked that there was just one holder. Now I have two. And with all the cruizin' we do in this truck.....it's wonderful.

I bought one of those for the ashtray in my 51. I welded a plate on top of the "fingers" under the cup, and opened the holes up some to fit my insulated cup. Carful placement of rubber sheet and edge welting ensures no metal rattling and no cup movement.
