Hi all, Just got done stripping my intake and exhaust manifold off my 261 with the 235 848 head. When I removed it there was no steel rings inserted in the intake manifold ports. I was just wondering if this was purposely or someone just didn't know. I have a new set on hand. But just wanted to be sure there wasn't a reason why someone had omitted them in the past. Engine runs great. Just getting ready to install my Fenton Dual exhaust manifold was the only reason for removing them. Thanks for your input. Jeff

Those rings are there to make sure the intake manifold and cylinder head ports align properly with the gasket. They DO NOT seal vacuum- - - -that's the gasket's job. Be sure the rings are short enough to allow the gasket to be compressed properly- - - -if the manifold has been machined to correct warp, it's possible for the rings to bottom out in the counterbores and cause a vacuum leak. If they're missing, you can make new ones from a thin slice of exhaust pipe tubing- - - -just cut a diagonal slot in the ring and trim the ends until the diameter is right for a snug fit in the counterbore. If you happen to be running a 216 intake on a 235, or vice versa, there are stepped-down rings available from some of the resto-ripoff vendors to align the mismatched port sizes. Jerry

Thanks Jerry, I actually have three new sets and six additional. You addressed my second question if I should coat them with gasket shellac. I test fitted them into the intake and then hung the intake on the head. It appeared to set flush and flat on all three ports without bolts or a gasket installed. I used VHT Flame Proof paint on the manifolds. Neighbor baked them in his powder coat oven for me. Hope it holds up. I also have to decide on carburetor. I have read most of your threads on CFM and over carburetoring the engines. The truck ran good on the Rochester. The Weber was given to me by Cosmo (fellow Bolter) who I bought the Fenton manifolds from. He indicated the carb ran good on his truck. I have no idea for the specs on the Weber. He furnished me with the adapter flange with it as well. I did locate a company called Pierce Manifold in Hollister, CA . Website site says everything Weber. They actually have an install kit for early Chevy Stovebolts.

Sounds like a plan. My only gripe about the Weber is the tendency to flood if you don't use a fuel pressure regulator. Webers like about 2 to 2 1/2 pounds of fuel pressure, and a stovebolt mechanical fuel pump can make about twice that much. That causes flooding problems. Have fun!
PS: I'd suggest using a MUCH larger air cleaner than either of the ones in your picture. Those will act like the choke is partially applied all the time, and cause lousy gas mileage to boot! Jerry

Good Morning , Thanks Jerry. I got the manifolds mounted yesterday. Biggest obstacle I'm encountering now is the throttle linkage. Any suggestions? The Fenton rear manifold is in the way.

Would a cable throttle device solve the problem??? I anticipate a similar issue so looking for a solution.... I am toying with a RH drive with the throttle linkage going from the right side up to the front of the engine....with a shaft underneath the water pump and back the left side to the mid engine bell crank.....phew!!!! with all the little connections the free play is deplorable... as anyone used these hot rod cable system.....?
