If you know me – you know I won’t fly. The family has a planned vacation in Sedona Arizona, south of Flagstaff. So – I’m driving from Morrisville Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia.
My 47-3800 dually known as Deadwrench is a strong runner and I am for the most part doing this and that to it – maybe next get the wipers to behave and finish up the interior with a headliner and other trim. I don’t need much for it – until I see something……
I filled the hole in wrenching by putting a 1955 Chevrolet 210 wagon together. I need some parts like interior trim – maybe a nicer front seat, window hardware, heater stuff etc. etc.. This and that if I saw one in a scrap yard to pick at. Funny but if I see something nicer in the way of parts I would pick it up.
This leads to my post here. I’m thinking the route out:
Philadelphia-Pittsburgh-Columbus-Indianapolis-St. Louis-Oklahoma City-Amarillo-Albuquerque-Flagstaff-Sedona
The return:
Same way back to Oklahoma City then peel off and try Memphis-Nashville-Roanoke and home. Perhaps a visit to a certain Bolter who just moved to AL…….(SIR)
Anyway – Can this pool of seasoned travelers/pickers/bolters/unbolters offer any locations not too far off the 70/270/55/44/40 interstates where a man can get lost in a decent salvage yard for a few hours?
Also – any “must-see” Chevrolet focused locations ? Cool museums ? Something to break the boredom of driving.
I’m an avid photographer and look to capture some images. I’ve been known to capture a few photos of railroads and can’t wait until I get onto BNSF territory, particularly the segment between Albuquerque and Flagstaff. During my time at Amtrak I traveled back and forth across the nation a dozen times – but always in a sleeper or on the headend. Now – I get the rubber tire experience.
Any thoughts?

I grew up in St. Louis but have lived in mid Missouri for over 35 years but still get up there once in a while. One place I took Tim (PR57C) on our way to the last Homecoming was the National Museum of Transportation in South West St. Louis county. https://tnmonot far .org/ It's not far off of I-44 and we both really enjoyed it. If you want a place for lunch or dinner just off I-44, the Tater Patch in Rolla Missouri is the place to eat with plenty of hotels real close. Try their pork tenderloin, it's a Midwest thing. http://www.rollataterpatch.com/menu.htmlwPlease keep us posted on how this Junk yard road trip happens and of course we will need daily pictures. Don

But that's a bit out of the way. The National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum in OKC is interesting if you're into that. The National Route 66 Museum in Elk City, ,OK is worth an hour of your time, IMO. If you're looking for Railroad theme, Union Station in KC is pretty awesome, a little off your route though.

Actually I spent the month of February in Arizona and found nothing but great scenic views and interesting roads. Apache Trail is a great trip as well. All can be previewed on you tube, enjoy.

US highway 64 eastbound out of Memphis is a nice drive- - - -just watch out for the speed trap cops for the first 40 miles or so. 64 runs by my place, and John's new digs are just a bit southeast of the Jack Daniel's distillery in Lynchburg Tennessee. I stopped by 4,5,6 Chevy trucks in KC. Kansas/Nebraska have a lot as well. You'll be rubber necking!!
