Hello,

How can I identify what engine is in my 1948 GMC 9434?

This is the type plate and it states engine 'X256774'. Now, is that the number that the original engine would have been stamped with or is it the type of engine?

I would need to take the starter out to see the stamping on the right side, correct?

Under the distributor there is a machined flat area
Towards the starter, the engine serial is stamped into that flat surface, if it matches the number on the door tag then it’s the original engine, the engine serial tells you almost nothing about the engine except for the letter at the front which vaguely indicates it was intended for a truck and not a car
Would have been a 216, have yet to see the rare 235 early low pressure engines in our part of the world

Near the fuel pump raised in the casted surface there will be a 7 digit GM casting number for the block which also helps confirm the engine especially if it’s been replaced

From an online source I found. Canadian built GMCs used Chevrolet engines.

Some Canadian military vehicles were equipped with a 256 cubic inch GMC (not Chevy) engine. Those engines are extremely scarce south of the border- - - -they have a 270 bore size and a 248 stroke, I believe.

Biermann, the engine in your truck now is likely a plane-Jane 216 and either original or pretty much exactly what it originally had
Let us know the stamping by the distributor if you can clean it off enough
As mentioned above your gmc did originally come with the Chevy engine so you have many sources for replacements or parts found all over the prairies.

It is not easy and not original to swap it out for a gmc engine like the USA version of the truck
The Canadian gmc is built on the same Chevy frame so the engine mount points and radiator surrounds don’t work out without modifications

I will keep you posted.

I have a rebuild 216 in a cradle that has a CAD6,000 work order on it that I bought for half price to go into this truck. I am charging the 6V battery right now and we will do a compression test to see where we are with the engine and if he needs replacing.

More to come.
