Does anyone have a Napa or other part number for the starter motor on 1972 gmc 5500 with the 350

I come up with the following on NAPA's website using a 1972 GMC 3500 w/350 engine (they didn't list the 5500, but should be the same if the engine is the same.)

NRO 4N4795 or RAY 2464795 or RAY 2464803 or NRO 4N1091 or RAY 2441601

I did a little searching in GMPartswiki and found there are 3 different part numbered starters (all identified as heavy duty) listed for 1972 5000-5500 Series GMC trucks with the 350 engines. Need to know which transmission your truck has to refine the info and try and give you a number and possible pointers to a source for your starter.

Please be specific on the transmission identity in your reply and I can try and help further.

PS - Kevin beat me to the reply post button - LOL. I would note that the pictures of the starters I found searching NAPA don't match the starter mount bolt pattern in your pictures. May or may not be a deciding factor as NAPA often uses stock photos which aren't exact matches to the products.

Here is the starter I got from Napa and the one I took off the truck you can see the differences in the mounting flange I hope

Clean off the motor, there could be a stamped number on it. If it’s a Delco it will start with 110xxxx. But any number will help to identify it.

Can you take your old starter in and see if any of the NAPA numbers I posted match up?
Another alternative is to get your starter rebuilt, assuming there's a reputable rebuild shop in your area.

Ok I got 3 inches of grease off the motor this is the number I found 1108776 5m l71 delco Remy the truck has a 5 speed transmisson I’m not sure which one

There is a rebuilder about 50 miles from me trying not to go that route

You should be able to swap noses from your old starter to the new starter motor.

In going back and searching GMPartswiki again, the only non-automatic transmission starter listed for the 1972 GMC 5000-5500 series with the 350 V8 is shown as GM# 1108362. A look at GM#1108776 comes back as being a fairly generic starter used in many small block car applications, but pictures show those all to have different starter drive nose cones.

Further search under GM# 1108362 (Delco Remy) just shows as an obsolete number with many replacement numbers which are all listed as obsolete too.

I think if you take John L.'s suggestion a step further, and take both the old and new starters to your rebuilder, you could see if he can do the starter drive and nose swap to get a functional starter.

Take the starters back to NAPA. Have them lookup 1108345 or 1108369. They list six starters that look like yours. I would keep the old one.
This can help to identify starters. Use the housing number to cross reference the starter number.

I finally found a starter online from DB electrical this starter that’s on it right now is a Carquest reman the Carquest where I got it and they have one but but it’s $340

Hopefully I pushed the cancel order on the db starter fast enough if not I guess I’ll have a spare starter . The carquest in the next town has one in stock but 340$ I wish I had checked here again first thanks for the help
