I have a 52 3/4 ton and want to swap out the huck rear brakes. There was a tech tip called the need for speed where it said you could swap the rear brake setup from a (73-2006) fourteen bolt rear axle. Is this a direct swap? Any help would be appreciated. ThanksĀ

The short answer is, no it's not a direct swap. In the 1-ton forum, if I recall correctly, Grigg has a long thread about swapping a 14-bolt axle in place of an HO52/72 Eaton. In one of the discussions the question comes up about swapping the HO series brakes for the 14-bolt brakes, both Bendix. You have to really know the parts interchangability. There is a particular combination of backing plate, hub and shoe and drum that works. It's involved enough that I'm willing to wait till the Huck drums get too thin to use before I go down that path. Right now my issue is front drums. If I could find Bendix brakes from a 52 or later I'd do that immediately. Huck brakes work fine if they are in good shape, and despite comments to the contrary, they do have servo action, just not as effective as the Bendix units.

Ok thanks. I am going to disc on the front and was hoping I could just upgrade the rear.

I did the 14 bolt swap in my 1950 3600 and while I have not driven it yet (long story) it went fairly well. The biggest issues were the machining of the spacers and the cost to replace the drums. The 14 bolt I installed came from a 1986 C3500.
