To all my bolters that are smarter than me. Is the transmission mount the same for a 3 speed and 4 speed trans? I haven't seen anyone with a listing for a 4 speed mount. The 3 speed looks like mine (except mine has no rubber at all). Thanks in advance!

Brian, On my '51 3100, there is an "transmission mount" for my SM420 4 speed. The 4 speed is bolted to the bell housing which is supported by the rear engine mounts bolted to the bell housing and crossmember. Are you converting yours to a 4 speed???

I am not converting my truck. It came with a 4 speed. But when I pulled the engine / trans to have the engine rebuilt there was a "mount" the Ball at the End of the trans.

Brian, Is the pictured mount in this picture SM420 in a '51 3100 from another thread on the topic the one your are referring to?

Now you have me 2nd guessing my memory and will have to go relook at my truck. More on that when I can get time to go check. wink

Classic Industries lists this transmission rear mount for both 3 and 4 speed applications. They also offer a mount repair kit but it currently shows as out of stock.

Gdads51 Thank you. This is the mount that I am talking about but the listing on Jim Carters Websites only states 3 speed. I was unaware that the "rubber " pieces where a rebuild kit for these. OK well I will look and see if I can find a rebuild kit and go that route, as I would rather not spend 100 buck to replace my original

Thank you again! I love this community!

If you already have the mount but the rubber is shot, you could do what i did and recast the rubber with 2-part polyurethane. I used a couple of pieces of plywood as molds and poured the polyurethane in until it set up. I just used a little silicone grease as a release agent. Here's some pics. This is what I used.

Brian - Thanks for setting me back on the straight and narrow on the mount. While doing my weekly truck start and exercise this morning, I took a peek at my underside and reintroduced myself to that mount. Mine is decidedly well preserved (oil, road grime etc - LOL), but is definitely there. grin

Looks like Chev's of the 40s carries that rebuild kit too if you aren't able to try Kevin's self-rebuild solution.

Thank you to everyone that replied, it is appreciated. I suffer from being both cheap and impatient. These two characteristics don't often play well together but today they did. How you may ask>? Well the replacement part with shipping is over 100 dollars. Then the rebuild kit is like 10-15 bucks but will take at least 3 to 4 days. First one was too much and the second one was to long to wait. So here is what I did. I order this part from Orielly's WAL 35398 this is a universal Muffler hanger. Cut off the Reinforced with cloth Rubber part and made my own. Cost with the bolts was under 10 bucks and it is rebuilt. It will go on the truck tomorrow! WIN WIN WIN

I will try to figure out the picture posting gobbledy-gook and post some pictures but it will be later tonight!

I may in the future try the urethane but I didn't have the patients to order and wait for the product and the the trial and error of doing something for the first time.

In the interest of full disclosure, I initially used stuff that was too soft. It turned out that it wasn't durable enough. Fortunately, I saved the plywood molds and re-did it.

UPDATE: So the mount is in and works perfectly. We will see what kind of durability it has, but for now I am very happy with it. Full disclosure to all that try this in the future. If your transmission is in the truck the only way I found to install this was by unbolting the crossmember and mounting the trans mount loosely. Then sliding the crossmember forward and with a little lift from my bottle jack on the Torq tube it slid into place very nicely. Key here is assemble everything loose and tighten up after it is in place.

Now the best part of today was that I drove my truck for the first time in just about 10 Years!!!!!!!!!

Brian, Outstanding info and congrats on the first drive in 10 years. I had a similar successful first drive of my Grandpa's truck earlier this year after a 13 year hiatus. It's an incredibly awesome feeling, ain't it!!! yahoo

And if you don't have an extra muffler strap laying around, get out that blown car tire (or piece thereof) that you found along the highway and cut out a rectangular piece from the casing. Typically fabric reinforced rubber coated. Very stout. Old motorcycle tire casing is typically thinner than car/truck tire casing, if that works better for ya.

Another option that I have used successfully for transmission, crossmember, engine, etc. mounts for years is rubber grader blade material, it comes in 4” x 1” x length at many truck parts stores. Easily machined(put in freezer first for easier machining). If you can’t find any nearby, I can ship you a piece.

I like this idea but my better half is very particular about what I can and can not accumulate. LOL
