Hello: My old time parts shop is having trouble locating the diff side bearings for me. One just lost its retainer and chewed up a ball bearing! The master parts catalog lists it as 902100 New Departure ND0100. Anyone have cross reference for a new bearing? Also if you note in the picture the "thrust here" is facing out - the manual leads me to believe this should face in!

I believe the bearing is installed in the correct position as far as thrust with the outer ring getting the thrust from the outside. That's the same as the outer race on a tapered roller bearing being to the outside of the differential case. Differential side bearings are usually tapered roller, not ball bearings. Although this appears to be an angular contact ball bearing. I did find an old New Departure catalog entry with dimensions. See attached.
I looked around couldn't find a 43mm bore diameter bearing. I tried Timken, NSK, and SKF. The closest I could find was a 40mm x 80mm x 18mm 40 degree bearing (SKF 7208 series) in an SKF online catalog. That could probably be used by machining the diameter of the carrier down by 3mm (nearly 1/8".) If that's too small, a spacer could be machined for a 45mmx80mmx18mm bearing. That would be a 7209 series.

Thanks so much for the research! I was hoping someone might have an old book on here. I didn't think to look on ebay so that may be my best option - I only need one although it would be good to do both since I am in there.
What you say on the position of the bearing makes sense to me, especially comparing it to a tapered bearing which is more obvious.

Just to sew up this thread, I ended up getting a NOS bearing off ebay and its going to work just fine. However, I pressed it on my carrier ring side to discover that at some point the bearing has spun on the carrier and the fit is too loose. Some mechanic had already tried striking the race and that didn't work. I found a NOS carrier on ebay and that is on its way. Funny how a simple seal job has turned into a full rebuild! So it goes.

Mark, Great to hear you are getting things back in order. The best news in all this is you should only have to do this once since you found the issue before getting it all buttoned back up!
