For removal of the u joint in the torque tube on a 46 1/2 ton, do I support the rear end with jack stands, or do I support the rear frame with jack stands and let the rear dangle unsprung. I know you are supposed to place a jack stand under the center of the torque tube as it will have downward force once the u joint is removed. Looking to install an okie bushing asap. Thanks!

Big Tee, Your question is a good one, but will get the best answers to the topic in our Driveline forum, so it's been moved there for further conversation and help. Others will be chiming in soon! smile

I support the rear frame on both sides. I also support the TT up near the Ujoint to prevent the slap down when you disconnect the ujoint.

If you put jack stands under the axle tubes, the TT will slam down violently from the weight of the truck as the U joint is unbolted. Support the frame on jack stands, and use a small floor jack to lower the torque tube after you unbolt the universal joint.

Thank you all. The okie bushing install was a success!

Do you have a 3 or 4 speed transmission.. On my 54 3100 I had a 4 speed and it didn't have clearance to drop down. I had to raise it and remove the rear yoke. It hadn't been off in 70 years and was a tough one.. had to use a chain and pully to get it out.. I then had room to lower it and get the rest of the stuff off the shaft. Then thanks to input on here I raised the torque tube up and ran a 2/4 across the frame to support it up and out of the way and safe from coming down..

If you have a 3 speed you should be fine as for as clearance goes and can lower it down and remove everything.

On my 54 I took off the 4 u bolts popped it off the springs and slid it back a inch ,did not have to touch the brakes there was enough slack to let it back just enough.

On mine, I was able to remove the cross member right behind the transmission and drop the torque tube with no issues.
