The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Driveline Threaded bell housing

I recently picked up a SM 319 OD transmission and recently read that I would need a pass car bell housing because they are threaded on all four bolt positions, where the truck type are upper threaded and lower bolts to the transmission. Can I threw bolt and nut the two lower mounts? Grade 8 of course. Trying to get all my ducks in a row before I tear into this hopefully great upgrade. Truck is a 1967 Chevy

I think that thru-bolting the lower bolts would be fine. Be sure there's clearance to the clutch pressure plate. Just a random thought: Could the holes be tapped for a helicoil insert? Not sure if there's enough meat for the insert though, and a helicoil kit of that size would be a bit spendy, although knock-off kits are pretty cheap. Link

Yeah, I have a feeling thru bolting would be fine too, after all the powerplant is a 155hp 250 inliner

I think lots of us with T5 transmission swaps have bolt & nut in the lower transmission hole.

It's very common to use bolts with nuts on the lower mount location when using a car transmission.
A car bellhousing would be a step in the wrong direction as the bellhousing to crossmember
mounts are different.
