Getting ready to put the rear axle back together on the 54 .My question is what is used to seal the thin gasket opposite side of the rear axle cover gasket .

Whatever your favorite gasket sealer is. I used Permatex No.2 that I've had for years.

Permatex Super 300 has been my first choice for 50+ years.

I use High Tack to stick the gasket to the housing while I put the punkin in. I also use a couple of studs to guide it in. Otherwise it's all too easy to tear the gasket as you roll it off the jack into the housing.

Oh good. I was going to post a thread asking about the gaskets. I have a set of two - one thin as paper and the other thicker. I wasn't sure what side each go to, looks like the thicker gasket goes to the rear with the cover. Thanks!
