I need to modify my 235 water pump to fit in place of the 216 in my 48 5 window. Looked at the 2 low end press units at Harbor Freight. Probably would work but they sure look???? I have 4 8 ft. lengths of 4X3/16 wall channel. Thinking of making my own press. I think the most expenive part would be the hydraulic jack. Any one know of drawings or diagrams for building one of these things.

Another suggesting would be to go to a farm equipment dealer or truck shop and look at their press for ideas.
I, too, am building a press. I am still in the planning stages and am still gathering up (read scavaging) components. I will be using I-beam (5.5"X15X.375thick) for the legs and the top. The cylinder I am considering is about 6" bore with a 22" stroke. I will either use a John Deere closed center hydraulic pump or the gear pump that came with the cylinder. My press will also double as a tubing bender, hence the long stroke cylinder.
Channel iron would be easier to work with and most presses I have seen use channel iron for the frame, but the I-beam was cheap (17.5' for $10), at least for now :p The realistic price for everything I build is not realized until I build it. | | | | | Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 'Bolter | | 'Bolter Joined: Feb 2000 Posts: 587 | Homier or HDC tools by me has a 12-ton for $59.00 and a 20-ton for $99.oo. The smaller one has the tilt-in top like those on H-B's site. Bigger one is straight. I'm thinking of one, bet you can't build one for those prices. It will get little use and take up lots of room in shop, that's the bummer part and why I won't put lots of $ into one.

| | | | | Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 Shop Shark | | Shop Shark Joined: May 2001 Posts: 477 | i saw a great homebilt press made from the frame rains of an allis chalmers tractor. the holes where the frame bolts to the differential were welded to plates, and the guy used a 20 ton jack. it was big enuff to press axle bearings, or just about anything else. he had 40 bucks in it. guess i could sketch it out and send it to you.  | | |
