I have a steering column out of a 1965 c10. It is a solid shaft with no couplers. It is measuring 56 1/2inches from the end of the coupler to the end of shaft attaching to the steering wheel.
i'm working on a 63 c10 short bed fleetside i bought without engine or transmission. the steering column was in the bed, along with a steering shaft.. it was originally a three on the tree. the po had started a "resto" that included a powerglide the tunnel was already "chopped up" i put a muncie m20 in it. i took apart the column and swapped the steering shafts since there was quite a groove in the one. everything came apart and went back together easily. i installed it and left the wheel off since i was rewiring the truck. (witch is an entirely different, frustrating, story still giving me fits). i put the wheel on to finish the horn and there was a bout a 2 inch gap between the bottom of the wheel and the turn signal cup. i checked everything i could think of and asked on this site what the length of the shaft was. mine is the same as your 65's. i loosened /removed mounting screws and pulled the jacket up to the wheel it looked perfect except where the mounting screws go into the jacket are up past the dash! i'm thinking they either changed the length of the shaft between 63 and 65 or i am missing some adjustment procedure.
rgie, Can you post some pics of the engine compartment side of the shaft and connections to the steering gear. It will probably help folks offer some better suggestions/answers to your "too long" shaft problem.

lugnutz i remember using you column build when i swapped out the steering shaft. just looking at the pictures of your column install make me believe the shaft i used is not the correct length. look at the picture attached above labeled gap. thanks rolf
Rolf, those pictures are good! Just hard for me to look at on my phone as I’m away from my laptop.
I need a bigger screen so I can look closer at your setup. Will look at it on laptop in the morning and see if it may trigger a light bulb moment.

It’s the column support bracket. Goto lugnutz steering columns Installation instruction, scroll down to the column support bracket picture. You have the wrong bracket or it’s been cutoff. The mast jacket has to come into the cab more. Look at the fire wall in the engine compartment, the jacket is sticking out to far. You have the right steering shaft.
