I have a 1953 with the later 235 . I had to do the water pump short shaft mod but it seems like it puts the fan lower and the radiator is lowest it can go . It run to hot idling is that anything I can do for better cooling

Member Pre '68 Dave designed and offers a pump relocation kit that will put the water pump in the correct "sweet" spot for providing the best cooling. Check out his websitefor a ton of great info 235's and the relocation kit!

I have installed this kit on my ‘59 235 in my ‘52 3100. You will need to buy a water pump for a ‘53 216. I included a picture of mine.

You can also buy a 16" flexi fan that will still clear the lower radiator outlet. I used one at one time but I had to flatten out the blades because they had too much pitch and hit the crank pulley. I also need the fan to pull lots of air at 3000 RPM when pulling a hill. I now have a 16" 6-blade truck fan and it cools fine. That said I also have an electric pusher on the other side of the radiator wired to a 205 deg. fan switch. The pusher goes on in hot weather on a long hard pull and after shut down sometimes but not at parade speeds.

Yes, you will have to remove the hood latch plate, radiator and the grill. I installed mine with the engine in the truck. Here is a link to a post when I installed it. [LINK]

You don’t have to remove the harmonic balancer like I did. I needed to replace mine.

Does it have to be specifically a 1953 pump? I thought any 216 pump would do as long as the pulley was the right belt width for one's balancer.

Yes you are correct but to expand your statement and to avoid confusion, I’ll add this, copied from a previous post by “Pre '68 Dave”, the inventor of the adaptor plate.

With the relocation plate you must use:
1941-52 for 5/8" belt.
1953-54 pass or 1953-55 first truck, for 3/8" belt.

I have also machined the 216 water pump pulley hub to accept a small block Ford V8 stamped sheet metal pulley. They're available in one and two sheave types for people who run accessories like air conditioning and power steering, along with an alternator and a high mount water pump.
