I am looking for the GM part # for the original AD truck 5" round outside mirror head highlighted in the Jim Carter Truck Parts "technical article" --see the attached photo. I would like to try and track one down. Any help related to this matter is appreciated.
And the mirrors on Ol' Roy are not the ones that it came with new?

Those are the ones that LUKE / Jim Carter says are incorrect. (note the ball and socket location)

Thanks for the interest so far. All the major vendors carry reproductions, which are not the same as the original mirror heads. I am not looking for a repop.I want to try to find a good used original or NOS mirror head only. Finding out the correct GM part # is my starting point.
'57 GMC 102, Original 347 V8, HydraMatic, 3.08 rear gear, added A/C, disk front brakes, HEI, AFB carb, '98 Honda Black Currant paint. T-boned and totaled 10/12 '52 GMC 152 Stake Bed, Original 228, SM420, added A/C, HEI, disk front brakes, '67 Chev 3.55 rear gear. Gets used as a real truck.
Mine which is probably not original but very happy with it.

It appears the center post is welded or soldered on to mirror housing on originals and the reproduction ones have three screws. Both function just fine, but you’d lose points if showing/judging truck.

This used original 5” round mirror head received a full restoration and now is in service on the driver’s side of my 1948 Chevy ½ ton truck. It is “frosting on the cake” since adding the mirror arm extension several years ago.
After reading the “Tech Article” (pictured below) on the Jim Carter Truck Parts web site, I became intrigued with this mirror head. At the suggestion of a couple of fellow hobbyists, I called them in Kansas City and spoke with a salesman, looking for help in identifying the correct GM part # so that I could begin my part search. The salesman indicated that he would share my interest in the article and the part hunt with Jim Carter himself. A few hours later the salesman called me back and stated that a used head (and arm) was found on a shelf in the warehouse by Mr. Carter himself. I purchased it for a fair sale price and received it in the U.S. mail a few days later.
This was another interesting successful used part search for a hard-to-find part that will become a conversation starter. I believe the correct GM part # is 3696632, group 16.068.
Luke, An outstanding end result for your search. Your "frosting on the cake" looks great along with your outstanding truck! Thanks for sharing in your success!
