A good clue is HERE from the 2007 Stovebot Reunion. "So, wow, 2007 was a year of firsts for The Stovebolt Page! It was the first time to have shirts and a flag. This was the genesis of the purple. (2 pix)"
Compare it to the 2006 Reunion (only our second one). Those shirts were from the Hoo-ya Shoppe -- a standard black with "Stovebolts Rule" as the insignia.
More story. We had been looking for a color that would stand out in a crowd, to make it easier for us to spot each other, especially when NOT at a Bolter event. We thought orange would be good but Omaha Orange was a popular truck color. So was red, dark blue, green ... you get the picture. We hadn't seen a purple truck yet ... and it could be a subtle purple.
Added to that, we know how hard it is to pick truck paint on-line ... same holds true for fabric colors. The flag turned out more purple than blue so that kinda solitified that decision. I personally liked the idea more and more. (I think Alvin did, too. )
It wasn't until the next year (2008), that the purple shirts really took off. HERE IS that webpage with a great image of Bolters sporting their purple. That image was worth adding to this post.
We were easy to spot in a crowd now!
For me, on the Admin front, in the webpage designs (the html legacy pages), our standard colors had been red, white and blue. Besides the letters, those with the colors for the links. I needed something different than blue. So I used a purple that was subtle. John didn't seem to mind since it wasn't an outlandish purple. More of a blueish purple or purple-y-blue and the links stayed blue or red. I liked it more and more.

Donald, didn't mean to hijack your thread. I'll move it later once folks have read it enough.
