I have a 1942 3/4 ton (BL) with a 1962 235 attached to the OE bell housing. I want to go to a cable operated throttle as the old linkage is shot and has been a source of issues for several years. The foot starter assembly will be in the path of the new pedal and cable. I have converted the truck to 12 volt years ago.
My question is, will the later model solenoid operated starter (47-53) follow the same 2 bolt pattern as the 42 foot starter? Going to a solenoid starter would sure solve some problems for me. Any advice or experience is welcome.
Since no one responded I will Yes it will bolt up, but you need to pay attention when sourcing a starter as to starter/ flywheel compatibility, many including me use a 6 v starter even after converting to 12v because it matches the flywheel. Per below it works fine, and spins the engine for quick starts…

he change to a 12 volt electrical system was made mid-year 1955. If you've got a 55 1st. series engine it would have been manufactured with a 6 volt starter and a 139 tooth flywheel. The 55 2nd. series engine would have a 12 volt starter and a 168 tooth flywheel. The simple fix will be to install a 6 volt starter- - - -it will work just fine on 12 volts.
The reason the starter and flywheel must match is because the geometry between the flywheel teeth and the starter pinion gear has to match up. A 139 tooth flywheel with a 12 volt starter will be noisy, and will wear out quickly. Ditto for a 168 tooth flywheel and 6 volt starter. Jerry
Running a 6 volt solenoid engaged starter on 12 volts might cause solenoid problems. I'd suggest finding a solenoid with a 12 volt coil and adapt it to the 6V starter motor. That takes a little tinkering with the solenoid mounting brackets. The other option would be to locate a 12V solenoid type starter from a 55-up 12V passenger car with a 235 and swapping to a 168 tooth flywheel. Jerry
