Has anyone worked on the shaft seal on the lever shocks? My right rear works fine but leaks around the shaft.

Shaft seals leak because the bearing or bushing behind them is worn, allowing the shaft to bounce up and down. Simply replacing the seal is usually only a temporary fix.

Yes I understand that the bushings will need replacing. Are there any specific tools or process to rebuild the shock.

lumbersawyer, Perhaps this old Chevrolet filmstrip for Rebuilding Slides for 1937-49 lever action shocks found in Brad Allen's "flickr" site may be of help in answering your question???

From what I read in those slides and Pg 2-11 of the 1947 Truck Shop manual, leaks around the shaft are noted as not repairable and require the shock to be replaced.

There are several vendors that offer rebuild services though. The Filling Station will rebuild your originals, or you can get already rebuilt rear shocks left 1/2 ton and right 1/2 ton from Jim Carter. Hope this info proves helpful. smile

Try these companies, too.

OEM and custom shock absorbers, USA made coil springs and leaf springs, steering dampers for all makes and models, rebuild service for original hydraulic and lever action shocks. Rebuild service for steering gears and power steering pumps.

Thanks Otto, I'll see if they can help with my shock. I have never taken one apart or looked inside, but they can't be that difficult. My old 47 3600 rides very well, better than my 2000 F250 so, I don't want to change anything on it from the original running gear. If I could identify the seal used and replace the bushing, I would tackle it myself.

One of those places might be able to tell you what parts to use.
