Oil filter canister for a 1954 Chevrolet 235, series SC-653. I have lost the spring that goes inside this unit. Is this spring absolutley necessary, and any suggestions for replacement spring. Second question, the oil line from the block to the oil filter canister, does it require an in line fitting that reduces the oil flow to the canister?

Thanks Red.

Yes. I believe it's a 1/8" inlet. The spring keeps the filter element in place. Any spring that fits will work.

A replacement spring can be made from the spring inside a common lawn sprinkler head. Just cut it to the length you need. Easy as pie. You can find these at any hardware store and it will be less expensive than finding a true replacement spring...maybe $4 or $5 for an inexpensive head.

There should also be a big flat washer between the spring and the top of the filter cartridge. The standpipe the cartridge slides over has the 1/16" flow restrictor orfice drilled into it- - - -no need to put one in the supply line.

Of course I messed up the dimensions. I should know not to trust my memory for this stuff.
