So I drained the oil from the 1959 235cu engine then removed the round cap to the external oil cannister. Lifted the cannister sytle filter out yet it was still half full of oil. Left over night and still full. So I unthreaded the hoses and dumped it out. The filter measures 3-3/4"W x 4-3/8"L. The only markings are "P3" printed on top? Parts store doesn't show this size for a 59. Can't find it?? Any ideas. Thanks
P3 is the AC filter designation for it. Also a Wix 51050. LINK\

The oil in the canister will not drain out. You need to get a little suction pump or turkey baster or something to remove the oil when you change the filter element. When refilling the crankcase, refill the canister as well.

Thanks again for the link. Guy at O'Riellys couldnt find anything yesterday. With your link I wrote the wix # and he walked over and back with the correct filter. Thanks again
Thanks Otto, so it's pressure in and pressure out?
Actually, it's because there's the standpipe in the middle that has a hole up near the top of the canister, so the oil can't drain out below the level of the hole. Some canisters have a drain plug.

There's a 1/16" flow control orfice at about the level of the inlet port in the side of the canister. That keeps the pressure drop in the canister to a minimum, since oil that goes through the filter gets dumped back into the oil pan. Oil filters were optional equipment- - - -the engine gets lubricated the same way with or without a filter installed. Even if the filter gets installed dry, the canister fills in a few seconds after an oil and filter change on the first startup. Check the oil level and top it off to the full mark on the dipstick after a few minutes of run time. Jerry
