I have the heat riser removed at the moment because I am working on the exhaust. I wire brushed the built up carbon off all of the surfaces.

It currently moves smoothly and opens and closes with engine heat as it should.

Is there anything other than cleaning I should do to it while it is out and accessible?

I use powdered graphite in the squeeze tube that's usually used to lubricate lock cylinders, and squirt a little on the pivot points where the shaft goes through the exhaust manifold. The powder won't burn and gum up like grease-based lubricants do.

Thanks Jerry, I have a couple tubes on the shelf and will give it a few shots.

As Jerry said, graphite is good. What I've learned about these is if the vehicle is driven regularly, there will generally never be a problem. It is when the thing sits there and humidity/rust set in that it fails to work.

Does copper anti-seize work under that kind of heat? Not sure what the carrier is that suspends the copper flakes.

As I said, any grease-based lube around a heat riser isn't a good idea. I have monitored exhaust gas temps at cylinder head ports in the 2K degree F. range on a hard dyno pull. I don't know of any lube that will stay put when a cast iron manifold approaches a dull red color, but dry graphite has a better chance of it than any liquid or paste.
